Welcome to MacGregor House

    A Note from Current Residents:

MacGregor House is comprised of 312 singles and 3 doubles, distributed between the high-rise and the low-rise. Our singles are grouped into suites of either 6 or 8 people (high-rise or low-rise, respectively), with each suite having its own bathroom, kitchen, suite lounge, and a Graduate Resident Advisor (GRA). Suites are then grouped into 9 entries—extended-family-sized living units of about 30-44 people —labeled A through J (because “i” entry is imaginary, of course), with side lounges on each floor and a main lounge.

In MacGregor, there is an entry for everyone. Some entries go to all you can eat sushi, hiking, play video games, board games, play sports, and ski trips, go adventuring around campus, Boston, New England, and still others dress up and go out for dinner. If you choose to live in MacGregor, you’ll get to meet all the entries and pick for yourself which one you'll call home.

MacGregor has a wide array of facilities for its residents: a weight room, game room (Projector, Switch, PS4, puzzles, air hockey, ping pong, foosball, etc.), music room (equipped with guitars, drums, and a piano), and many study spaces (including group study rooms, whiteboards, library-like atmospheres, and an Athena computer cluster). Because of our kitchen facilities, it is easy to cook for yourself (or in entry cooking groups) or walk to a dining hall if you'd rather be on the meal plan. And the best part is that after a long day, you can come back to relax with your friends in the entry lounge or go to your own room to unwind.

At MacGregor, we don’t just have rooms, suites, or entries; we have families.

MacGregor House is a Cook-for-Yourself community, which means a meal plan is not required to live within the building.  Residents use shared kitchen areas on each floor to cook their own meals.

Residents of the building may still opt to enroll within any meal plan available through MIT Dining. In-house dining areas are located throughout the campus and are open to the entire MIT community. They provide a broad range of diverse and healthy options prepared from fresh quality ingredients. Please see the MIT Dining website for additional details.

A unique feature of MIT’s residential system is that student Room Assignment Chairs or "RACs" coordinate individual room assignments in each building along with members of their House Team.  Each house approaches room assignments a bit differently but all follow these principles:

    • New student preferences will be used to make room assignments.
    • Upper-level students will not preference or select students to live on their floors/entry/community.
    • First-year students may opt out of exploration and are not required to move.

First-year students visit each entry during the EASE (Entry and Suite Exploration) to get a better sense of its culture. At the end of EASE, they rank the entries and will receive a new placement by the morning.

First-years may opt-out by submitting an opt-out form and meeting with the Area Director.
