Maintenance

House Operations Managers (HOMs) are assigned to each residence and are full-time staff members responsible for the operations and facilities of a residence. HOMs supervise building operations, including the front desk, cleaning, and maintenance staff. Reach out if you have questions about the residence.
Something wrong in your residence?

Atlas service requests are how we know there's a facilities issue! If you notice a problem, let us know. Is it an emergency, like a flood or a loss of power? Call House Operations (Unit 12) at 617-253-1500.

Maintenance and Pest Issues

  • If you are experiencing a maintenance issue, submit an online service request through Atlas (MIT certificates or credentials required).
  • Once you submit an issue through this ticketing system, it will send you tracking information and will notify you when the issue is resolved.
  • If you see rodents or other pests, including bed bugs, tell your house operations manager immediately and report it through Atlas. Although all buildings adhere to regular extermination schedules, they will take further precautions if necessary.
  • To reduce the incidence of pests, always put garbage in cans, make sure food is in sealed containers, and keep kitchen areas clean. Do not bring upholstered furniture into a residence hall unless you are certain of its origin and history.

Emergency Maintenance

If you encounter an urgent maintenance request (such as a flood or electrical outage) or one outside of regular business hours, you should contact HRS Operations (Unit-12) at (617) 253-1500 or 3-1500 from any MIT phone.

Other Maintenance Concerns

Air Conditioning

Window unit air conditioners (A/C) are permitted in most residence hall rooms with double-hung windows where the A/C can be safely and structurally supported. All air conditioner installations MUST be approved and then inspected by the house operations manager or mechanic. Residents are required to submit a request to install an A/C unit through Atlas

Residents who have air conditioners installed are required to submit an Atlas service request to have them removed before they move out of their rooms.

Only portable air conditioners are permitted within Burton-Conner, MacGregor, and Maseeh. Please ensure that the portable unit includes an internal water reservoir rather than a hose type. Window air conditioners are not permitted within these buildings. 

Heat and Utilities

All utilities, including heat and hot water, are included in your rent. Every residence has a different heating system, and we encourage you to check with your house operations manager if you have questions about temperature control in your unit.

Moving Furniture

Residents are responsible for all furniture provided in your unit. You are not permitted to remove it from your residence, move furniture into or out of common spaces, or swap furniture with another resident. On-site storage is not available but students can arrange to store their personal belongings in off-site storage.

Right of Entry

MIT recognizes that entry into your private living space is a serious matter, and we endeavor to respect your privacy to the greatest extent possible. MIT will attempt to give reasonable advance notice prior to entry, but because on-campus residence halls are MIT property, authorized MIT personnel have the legal right to enter MIT student housing under certain circumstances.  Housing & Residential Services, Residential & Community Life, house operations managers, heads of house, and their agents and contractors, as well the MIT Police, have the right to enter MIT student housing at any time when it is determined there might be a risk to life, safety, health, or property, or as necessary to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws, and all applicable MIT policies. Entry without advance notice is also allowed for maintenance services requested by a resident of the room, as outlined in the maintenance request form.
