What to Bring

As you start your back-to-school shopping, keep these guidelines in mind as you purchase supplies for your room.

✔️ clothes (keep in mind local weather - you’ll need a heavy winter coat, gloves, scarf, and appropriate shoes or boots for walking in the snow)

✔️ dishes and silverware
✔️ fan
✔️ laundry basket and detergent
✔️ message board for your door
✔️ pillow and pillow cases
✔️ speakers
✔️ rug 
✔️ small refrigerator
✔️ soap, shampoo, toiletries
✔️ surge protector
✔️ towels and wash cloths
✔️ umbrella
❌ any cooking devices
❌ microwaves (not allowed in rooms, but available in residence kitchens)
❌ coffee makers/Keurigs
❌ hot plates
❌ instant pots or crockpots
❌ toaster/toaster oven
❌ candles or incense
❌ live holiday/christmas trees
❌ large wall coverings
❌ open heating elements
❌ halogen lamps
❌ weapons of any kind, including guns and knives

Choose to Reuse

Many of the items you might want to bring can be purchased in gently used condition for <$10 from the MIT Trash2Treasure reuse sale, held on Registration Day. Visit https://ua.mit.edu/sustainability for more information and to learn more about the UA Committee on Sustainability.

Stuff for Food Preparation

Cook for Yourself residences have fully stocked kitchens with pots, pans, utensils, and common cooking appliances. Check in with your residence government before bringing any cooking devices, as they may already be available. Cooking devices are not permitted in student rooms.
