Before Your Departure
Once you are accepted into a study abroad program, you should complete a housing cancellation form by logging onto the housing portal and navigating to forms> undergraduate forms> housing cancellation form. Indicate in the drop-down menu that you are participating in a study abroad program.
Preparing to Return
- Request housing for your return to MIT by submitting either a housing intent form (fall return) or housing waitlist application (spring return) in the Housing Portal.
- On the form, select the study abroad option and provide your building preferences. Housing & Residential Services will make every effort to try to place you in your preferred residence hall, as long as space is available.
- If you were in on-campus housing before your study abroad program, you are guaranteed to return to housing when you return.
Moving from FSILGs to on-campus housing
If you live off-campus or in an FSILG before your study abroad program, you are not guaranteed placement in an on-campus residence hall when you return. If you are interested in living in on-campus housing, submit a housing waitlist application in the Housing Portal.
Room Assignments
Returning for the spring semester:
The Room Assignment Chairs (RACs) of your assigned building will work to assign you a room based on the respective house room assignment process.
Returning for the fall semester:
Please submit a completed housing intent form in your Housing Portal (when the online form is available) to share your building preferences. In the spring, each residence hall holds an in-house lottery to distribute assignments. Students who are studying abroad are included in this lottery.
