Eligibility
Summer housing is available to fully-enrolled MIT undergraduate students who will maintain enrollment at the Institute this upcoming fall (including within graduate degree programs) and who:
- Participate in academic department or summer programs such as the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP);
- Have jobs or internships in the Boston-Cambridge area related to their field of study at MIT; or
- Require on-campus housing while transitioning to a summer conference group.
Please note that if you become ineligible for fall registration during the summer, you must move out of their summer assignment upon notification of your change in status.
If you do not receive a housing assignment through the lottery, or if you apply after the above deadline, you will be placed on the summer housing waiting list. Assignments will be made as space becomes available, but we are unable to guarantee a summer housing assignment. We encourage you to sublicense from an MIT community member in graduate housing.
Residence halls used for summer housing vary each year depending on summer programming and building maintenance schedules. Summer housing is billed at a flat rate for the entire summer housing period, and proration is unavailable.

If you are on the summer housing waiting list, your cancellation policy is determined based on when you receive building placement.
If your building placement is confirmed before May 8:
If you cancel your summer housing before 11:59 pm ET on May 8, you will not be assessed a cancellation fee. After May 8, you will be charged the full summer housing rate.
If your building placement is confirmed between May 9 and May 30:

If your building placement is confirmed after May 31
If you are offered a building placement after May 31, you have 48 hours to accept summer housing. If you cancel summer housing after accepting, you will be charged the full summer housing rate.
Moving in
- Current on-campus residents will move from their spring assignment to their summer assignment on the date indicated above. Housing & Residential Services will email you with your transition details. You are expected to move on the date stated within the email.
- Students must be present on campus to remove their belongings from their spring assignment on or before the date indicated in the email.
- Failure to move out from their spring assignment by this date will result in revocation of summer housing and a possible $595 late checkout charge.
- If students will be away from campus for summer move-in, they must remove all their belongings from their spring space and can move in to summer housing on or after the stated date.
- If you do not have a current spring term assignment, you will receive specific guidance from Housing & Residential Services via email regarding your move dates.
- If you accept a summer housing assignment after April 30, we will make every effort to continue housing you until summer move-over, but we cannot guarantee there will be space. Please apply for summer housing before the priority deadline to ensure bridge housing until summer move-over.
Moving out
- If you will be living in an on-campus undergraduate residence hall during the Fall 2025 term, you will move to your Fall 2025 housing assignment on August 8, 2025.
- Failure to move on your assigned move date may result in a possible $595 late checkout charge.
- If you will not be living on campus during Fall 2025 term, you must check out of your summer assignment by 12:00 pm (Noon) ET on Friday, August 1, 2025.
- If you will not be on campus to move out on your designated move-out date, you must remove your belongings when you leave campus.
- Off-campus storage vendors can help store your belongings.
All summer residents will live in single rooms and will not have roommates. Rooms will be assigned by Housing & Residential Services.
The majority of our on-campus undergraduate residence halls are not equipped with full-building air conditioning systems. You are welcome to bring fans as well as in-unit air conditioning devices. Please connect with the House Operations Manager for your summer housing assignment for further guidance.
In-house dining areas are closed during the summer months.
You will have access to in-house shared kitchen areas to cook meals and store perishable items in shared refrigerators. There are a number of local grocery and food options. If you are in need of food assistance, you should connect with Student Support Services.
