Libby Hsu

Head of House

Libby & Michael Hsu have been the Heads of House at Random Hall since 2024. They enjoy being part of a vibrant, close-knit community that shows up for each other through all the joys and challenges of life at MIT. They have two budgies, Blue and Charlie, who contribute to the many types of musical expression one hears at Random. Libby and Michael also enjoy games and puzzles, cooking and baking food to share, and nature appreciation.

Libby received master's degrees in structural engineering (2010) and building technology (2011) from MIT. As a graduate student, Libby became involved in D-Lab, which is committed to designing for a more equitable world by addressing global poverty challenges using participatory design. Libby has taught at D-Lab since 2012 and now holds the title of Lecturer & Associate Director of Academics, managing D-Lab's academic and student travel offerings as well as teaching two classes about international development and WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene).

Libby is committed to ensuring the safety and success of students, both on campus and on their fieldwork trips around the world, and personally works with students on field projects related to water, sanitation, and the co-design of many technology prototypes in countries including Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, and Mexico. Libby loves talking to students about how they can have social impact in their field during and after their time at MIT, promotes the practice of fiber arts on campus, and is sometimes known to play the piano for MIT Musical Theatre Guild productions.
