Welcome from DormCon

Welcome home, Class of 2021!

I know it’s cheesy, but it’s also true: you will discover so much at MIT. Not just about academics, but also about who you are, who you want to be, and the wonderful breadth and depth of your peers. These people will be your comrades, your confidants, your co-conspirators. Over the next four years, they, in all of their myriad roles in your life, will be integral to the process of deciding and becoming who you want to be. One of the first places where you will connect with these incredible people is in your dorm.

One thing that sets the MIT residential system apart from other colleges is the amount of choice a student has in where and who they live with. Each dorm at MIT has a unique culture shaped by past traditions as well as the interests of current residents, ranging from board games to theater to maker culture and everything in between. Each dorm will offer you a different set of people to learn and grow with. By choosing a dorm, you are not just choosing a place to live—you are choosing an environment that you want to shape and be shaped by. There are a few ways that you can begin this process:

  • First, watch the i3 videos! Click through the residence halls! Everything on this website was carefully curated by students and staff to offer you a picture of what they think is important about life in each of these inspiring places.
  • Second, experience each dorm in person during REX (Residence Exploration) when you first arrive on campus. REX is an opportunity unique to freshman year to meet people from across MIT and gain a deeper understanding of the communities you will find yourself a part of.
  • Third, and perhaps most importantly: think deeply about who you might want to be after each week, month, and year of your time here. Those values will help point you in the right direction, in this decision and in many others.

Here you begin the journey to find a home with people that you connect with. MIT communities have a diverse set of values and interests, and even before the semester starts you have the opportunity to decide which of those you want to incorporate into your own life.

We look forward to seeing you at REX in the fall. Until then, have a look around this site and don’t hesitate to email us if you have any questions!
